The mission of Estonian National Defence College's Centre for Conflict & Catastrophe Medicine is to train and prepare the servicemen and other staff for their work in conflict and catastrophe areas and crises and injuries that are relatively unknown to civil medicine.

In Researchers' Night Festival, the centre presents their equipment and skills by creating an authentic field hospital, similar to those that operate within real conflict areas. Find out how to carry out the triage, how does an "ordinary" workday look like at a field hospital - and how can a field hospital operate in harsh conditions at all.

If you've ever thought that researchers are a weird and solitary bunch of people who hide between the lab doors and do some stuff that non-researching folk can never really understand, you better think again! Come and meet the real researchers, hear their inspiring and interesting tales and discuss the latest scientific discoveries. In a cosy and informal setting, between a cup of coffee and some tasty snacks - and for free!

This year's first Cafe Scientifique welcomes Anneli Kolk, senior research fellow in neuropsychology of the University of Tartu. Aging (and the changes it causes) is something that's becoming more and more relevant for both a single individual and the society as a whole. What are the latest discoveries in aging research and how can one age successfully? How does aging affect our brain, are there gender differences in aging, and what do genetics and behaviout have to do with it? And is there a way we could delay aging?

Lucy is a young and carefree university student, who ends up as an involuntary drug trafficker. A packet of extremely strong synthetic chemical hidden inside her stomach starts to leak and circulate inside her body. Instead of causing lethal injuries, the drug has an unexpected effect on Lucy, turning her into a ruthless fighter, who defies every law of physics and human logic. Lucy is beginning to perceive the surrounding world in a completely new way and actually change it, thanks to her gradually growing superpowers.

The core concept of the movie is a popular opinion that people only use up to 10% of their brain capacity. After being "infected" by the drug, Lucy surpasses this limit manyfold. Could such superhuman really exist? Is the meager 10% the best we can do?

Commentary by Aleksandr Bregin, explainer of AHHAA and a PhD student in neurosciences (University of Tartu).

Culture meets geology meets sports! "Kivi" means "stone" in Estonian and that's what it's all about: real stones, artificial stones, stone figures and sculptures and their relations to the two legendary districts of Tartu (Annelinn and Karlova). Take a tour with us and find out the origin stories of these two areas of town, and feel them with your own eyes and hands. We'll also take a brief tour to the stony underbelly of Aura Water Park and end our tour at Kivi Bar (which refers to an entirely different variation on the word "stone"!). Don't rush away just yet, because a Cafe Scientifique will begin in nearby Vein ja Vine (Rüütli 8) at 19.30. Come and discuss whether different drugs are all the same, or are they different?

A science cafe / discussion on the household chemicals and their impact on our health (and staying healthy), lead by biologist Kaarin Koosa.

Would you take a lethal dose of poison? Most likely not. But have you ever thought about slowly reaching the said dose by eating, say, one fish or cucumber at time. How many years would it take before the harmless becomes harmful?

If we flush something down your kitchen sink, will it disappear completely? If we wear gloves to protect yourself from the abrasive chemicals, do we ever think about the fact that sooner or later, they'll end up among animals and plants (who have no means of protecting us), and right back on our table.

Every home and household contributes a bit to the "poisonous circle" and water purification plants can't get rid of all the unwanted traces. Do you really need all the super-effective supermarket chemicals - or are there other ways that would be both nature- and people-friendly? Come and test some of the alternatives (that you could easily make yourself, and maybe even save some money!) and discuss how each one of us could make a difference!

The Society of the Students of Biosciences presents: on 22nd September, professor Arvo Viltrop (Estonian University of Life Sciences) talks about African Swine fever - the disease that has been spreading rapidly in Estonia lately. How does it appear and spread? Can we stop the disease from spreading - and how?

A gripping drama that unfolds in the darkest corners of Los Angeles. Lou Bloom is an eager and driven young man desperately looking for a job. A random encounter with nightcrawlers, the freelance camera crews who film the car crashes, fires and other mayhem, takes him to the extremely competitive world of TV. Being the first one with the story - and the most shocking one at that - is what matters the most. And if your tale isn't gritty enough, you might need to "work" on it before you sell it.

Lou is aided by Nina, a veteran producer in charge of a relatively unpopular news channel. His footage is giving the viewer numbers a real boost, making him seek for more blood and gore. Is he still an observer of these stories - or a participant?

Where do we draw the line between "real" and tabloid journalism? The media is full of blood and violence, and it's constantly getting worse - is it something the journalists want to show us, or something that we expect them to show us? Which one is more important: being the first one to tell the tale and always having the most shocking tale to tell - or the human compassion and ethics?

Commentary by Mathis Bogens, Marketing and Communications Manager of AHHAA, MSc in Journalism (University of Tartu)

This Cafe Scientifique brings together the German project "Wonderkids in Hospital" and Estonian project "Dr. Clown", both dedicated to working out different methods to divert hospitalised children. We'll talk about how to make the little patients happier and speed up the recovering process. Come and hear the origin stories of the two projects, their methods, obstacles they've overcome and lessons they have learned, feedback from the hospitals, their accomplishments and success stories!

Eva, a successful journalist, turns down her career to focus on her newborn son. But her family life won't be as happy and harmonious as she'd imagined. The relationship between mother and son is always intense and Kevin is displaying sociopathic tendencies from early on. Eva can't control her son and feels guilty about it.

When Kevin is 15, he commits a severe crime. Eva is as shocked as everyone else, but also feels that she's also responsible in a way. Has she ever truly loved her son and how much are Kevin's deeds actually her fault? We often think that the actions and choices of the criminals can be attributed to their miserable childhood. Is it really that black and white? If Eva had raised her son "right", would Kevin not have committed the crime? What are the underlying reasons for personal disorders, what do they "look" like and can they be treated?

Commentary by Dmitri Rozgonjuk, explainer of AHHAA and a PhD student in psychology (University of Tartu)

The beginning of (a new) life is one of the most mysterious biological processes: the genes of a mother and a father combine to create an offspring. Reproduction is one of the most basic and ancient aspects of life. Now, at the age of medical and technological progress, every nuance of reproduction and birth could be changed forever.

Treatment of infertility is one of the areas of medicine on which the development of science and technology has had a profound impact. The first "test tube baby" was born a couple of decades ago. Back then, this was considered a way too serious intervention in nature. Today, we can go even further. But how far should we go and what should we consider the most: the ever-expanding possibilities of technology, ethical principles or basic human needs?

Andres Salumets, professor of the Institute of Biological and Translational Medicine, University of Tartu, talks about the possibilities of reproduction and reproductive medicine: test tube children and the fancy promises of genetics. How many parents will future children have - one, two or even three?
